Every 3 June, the world celebrates World Bicycle Day 2026 — and for me, it is less of a date on the calendar and more of a way of life. I have been cycling for almost a decade now. In that time the bicycle has taken me across city streets and out onto open highways, introduced me to some of the finest people I know, and taught me more about my own city than any map ever could. So this year, even though the official day has just passed, I didn’t want to let the moment go by without writing about it — especially because the best is still ahead of us this weekend.
World Bicycle Day 2026: Why 3 June Matters
The United Nations declared 3 June as World Bicycle Day in 2018, when all 193 member states unanimously recognised the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable and clean means of transport. The widely observed theme for 2026, “Cycling for a Greener Future,” says it perfectly: the humble cycle is one of the most powerful tools we have to cut pollution, ease traffic, improve our health, and build more liveable cities.
Think about it — a bicycle needs no fuel, emits nothing, costs little, keeps you fit, and still gets you where you need to go. Two centuries after it was invented, it remains one of humanity’s smartest ideas.
A Decade in the Saddle
People often ask me how I got so hooked. The honest answer is that cycling gives back far more than it asks. Over these years I have taken part in countless rides and events — early morning city loops, long-distance endurance rides, and group rides with clubs from every corner of Mumbai. Each ride leaves you a little fitter, a little calmer, and a lot more connected to the road and the people on it.
Somewhere along the way, cycling stopped being just my hobby and became my way of contributing to the city. As a Bicycle Councillor with Cycle Chala City Bacha (C3B), I have worked to make cycling safer, more visible, and more welcoming for ordinary riders. And whenever a fellow rider needs help — a breakdown on the road, advice on their first bike, guidance before their first big ride, or simply the confidence to start — I try to be there. That, to me, is what the cycling community is really about: we ride together, and we look out for each other.
Cycle Chala City Bacha: A Movement, Not Just a Ride
Cycle Chala City Bacha — literally “ride a cycle, save the city” — captures everything World Bicycle Day stands for. It is a movement that pushes for cleaner air, safer roads, and a culture where choosing the cycle over the car is normal, easy and even aspirational. The Bicycle Councillors who drive this work do it out of pure love for the city and the planet, and it has been one of the most rewarding things I have been part of.

This is more than a ride. It is a city coming together — clubs that usually ride their own routes, riders of every age and every kind of bicycle, all pedalling for the same cause: saving fuel, cutting emissions, and showing Mumbai what sustainable mobility actually looks like. Whether you ride every day or haven’t been on a cycle in years, there is a place for you in this peloton.
Why You Should Get On a Cycle
If you have been meaning to start, let this be your nudge. Here is what the bicycle gives you:
- Your health, transformed. Cycling builds stamina, strengthens the heart, helps manage weight, and is wonderfully kind to the joints.
- A cleaner city. Every short trip you make on a cycle instead of a car or two-wheeler means less fuel burned and cleaner air for everyone.
- Money saved. No fuel, minimal maintenance, no parking headaches — the cycle is the most economical ride in the city.
- A community for life. The friendships you make on group rides are some of the most genuine you will ever find.
- Beating the traffic. On Mumbai’s crowded roads, there are days a cycle is simply the fastest — and certainly the most enjoyable — way to get around.
A Few Tips Before You Ride
From one rider to another: always wear a helmet, keep your cycle well maintained, use lights and reflectors in low light, stay hydrated (especially in our humidity), follow traffic rules, and start with shorter rides before building up distance. And if you ever need help getting started or sorting out an issue on the road, reach out to the cycling community — we genuinely love helping new riders find their feet.
Let’s Pedal for a Greener Future
World Bicycle Day 2026 is a reminder that the solutions to some of our biggest problems — pollution, congestion, lifestyle disease — can be as simple as two wheels and the will to ride. After almost ten years in the saddle, I can promise you this much: the day you make the cycle a part of your life, your city starts to feel different, and so do you.
So this Sunday, 7 June, dust off that bicycle, fill your bottle, and come ride with us. Let’s save fuel, promote sustainable mobility, and pedal Mumbai towards a greener future — together. 🚴
